Artistic Intentions for the Semester

My initial intention for this semester is to further investigate the concept of abstraction in photography, and to manipulate the medium more from the painter’s mindset and approach. After absorbing and ruminating over all the information collected at the residency, considerations to my direction this semester are distilling into two distinct categories of thought: what is the content and what is my process. Understanding full well that one may dictate the other and vice-versa, and being open to the possibilities that they—along with my academic research focused on abstract art—may uncover, while also keeping an eye on future semesters work and my thesis.

Content

I am interested in our relationship with the intangible and its impact on the tangible. That every living thing is connected to a universal source of energy and information, and that both our collective and individual thoughts direct this energy to create the experience we call reality. I want to focus my art on the journey through space and time to an alternate plane of existence – not a dream state, or a memory — but to a metaphysical place created (whether by intention or by default) solely through the energy of focused thought.

Specific concepts to explore, using nature as the agent, will be:
— Space
— Time
— Energy
— Thought

Process

I intend to initiate a process, similar to an abstract painter, focusing on the basics of light, color, form and movement, which may include:
Studies of movement through time and space:
Timed exposures, long exposure times with camera movement and multiple focal points within the single exposure, multiple depth-of-field exposures changing the range and depth of detail/focus, etc.

Studies of light:
Over- under-exposures, white light, shadow ‘dark’ light, etc.

Studies of color:
Colored light, monochromatic studies, “chromaphobia” studies

Viewpoint:
Hyper-macro focus, super wide-angle focus

Layering:
In image capture, image processing and printing.
