My academic reading will include the following material:

1. Abstract Art by Anna Moszynska
2. Abstract Movements in Modern Art by Mel Gooding
3. The Spiritual in Art: Abstract Painting by Maurice Tuchman
4. Paths to the Absolute by John Golding
5. Pictures of Nothing by Kirk Varnedoe

Field trips to the following museums. The purpose of the trip will to support the information from the readings above and also to seek out one painting in particular to do a further in-depth study and response on.

1. The Metropolitan, NYC
2. The Guggenheim, NYC
3. The MoMA, NYC
4. The Metropolitan, Philly
5. Mass MoCA, MA
6. Boston area, one of the following: MFA, DeCordova, or ICA

I will deliver the following by the end of the semester: Four papers delivered approximately 6 weeks apart: End of July, Start of September, Mid-October, end of November. Covering the following topics:

1. Reflections from the residency
2. First field trip report from one of the museum visits with focus on one piece, to be expanded on historically and a personal response. Also the relationship of Abstract Art and Photography in relation to my academic reading.
3. Second field trip report, structured the same as above, but with different museum/painting.
4. Essay from from the academic reading. Focus on specific topic TBD from the history of abstract art
5. New artist statement
